A neurologist and attorney Dr. James C. Johnston focuses on advancing global neurology. He is an Honorary Professor of Neurology at Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia where he has served over the past decade.

Dr. Johnston established the non-profit organization Global NeuroCare®, which is dedicated to advancing patient care, physician training and medical research in Ethiopia and other developing regions.

Global NeuroCare®, accredited by the World Health Organization, is one of the few organizations holding Special Consultative Status with the United Nations (UN) ECOSOC, allowing Dr. Johnston to participate in UN conferences and meetings, make recommendations directly to the UN intergovernmental bodies, and engage with other civil society organizations. He has presented policy recommendation statements at the UN High Level Political Forum, Commission for Social Development and the Integrative Segment. These UN adopted and published these statements in 2016 and 2017, contributing to advancing healthcare in sub-Saharan Africa.

Dr. Johnston is the Founding Partner of GlobalNeurology®, a unique international partnership of neurologists, neurosurgeons and neuroethicists dedicated to advancing sustainable, evidence-based neurological care.

He is one of the very few neurologists in the world qualified in law, with licensure to practice in both professions. A Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology with additional Certification in Neurorehabilitation, Dr. Johnston is also a Fellow in both the American College of Legal Medicine and the Australasian College of Legal Medicine.

A prolific author, Dr. Johnston has published over 100 peer-reviewed journal articles, editorials, and letters in leading medical journals as well as medical law journals including the Journal of Medical Ethics, Journal of Legal Medicine, Medical Law International and a number of other publications. He has contributed twelve book chapters in leading medical law treatises including the American College of Legal Medicine textbook Legal Medicine and Medical Ethics, Juris Publishers Medical Negligence and the internationally acclaimed Legal and Forensic Medicine.
